Plus there is nightlife and shopping to rival any metropolis in the world with some of the best restaurants, most luxurious hotels and truly decadent spas. Throw in a healthy does of history and culture with art galleries and museums and you have a thoroughly enjoyable city with a cheeky side as well.
Ayuthaya
Just one hour's drive from the madness of Bangkok is the World Heritage Site of Ayuthaya. This ancient capital still makes the spine tingle with its towering spires and ornate carvings. Sukhothai also has impressive ruins and nearby is historic Kanchanburi, infamous for the death railway and bridge over the River Kwai built by Allied POWs during the Second World War. The fun floating market is often including on tours of the area and great for souvenirs and pictures. For more on Ayuthaya.
Railay Beach, Krabi
The Andaman coast is commonly regarded as amongst the world's most gorgeous coastline and nowhere is it more spectacular than Railay Beach near Krabi. Awe-inspiring limestone cliffs tower above soft white sand and the emerald-green ocean. Those wanting hedonistic nightlife can take a quick trip to Koh Phi Phi where whisky buckets and all-night beach parties await, while diving fanatics will find Asia's best underwater scenes in the marine national park surrounding the nearby Similan Islands.
Chiang Mai
Thailand's northern city and former Lanna capital is a subject of great pride for Thai people. The ancient square city is surrounded by an impressive moat, and there are more striking temples here than any visitor could possibly hope to visit. But it is friendly people, laidback atmosphere and trekking opportunities in the nearby hills that keeps people here for longer than they planned. And with a plethora of high-quality international restaurants and cheap accommodation, it's little wonder why so many expats are calling Chiang Mai home.
Koh Pha Ngan
Famous for its raucous full moon parties, Koh Pha Ngan is a backpacker haven with still a few unspoilt secrets for those in the know. Had Rin beach is where the major nightlife venues can be found and although the atmosphere is extremely developed, the setting and beach is still pretty in places. And farther from the action you can still uncover little spots of paradise with coconut palms and tranquil waters lapping at your feet.
